Power Outage Survival Guide

How to handle a long power outage: food safety, staying warm or cool, using generators safely, and planning for powered medical devices.

Emergency? Call 112 now. Dispatchers will guide you through these steps on the phone.

  • Keep fridges and freezers closed. A full freezer keeps food frozen about 48 hours; a fridge about 4 hours.
  • Use torches, not candles, to reduce fire risk.
  • Generators and grills only outdoors, at least 6 m (20 ft) from doors and windows. Install a battery CO alarm.
  • Medical devices: if someone depends on oxygen, dialysis or powered equipment, register with your electricity provider, keep backup batteries and know where to go for power.
  • Unplug electronics to protect them from surges when power returns.
  • Stay informed with a battery or crank radio and a charged power bank.
